ISTD brief - rewritten

Original brief

The Brief

You must design a visual identity, way finding signage, promotional material and a 5 page website for a new museum and gallery that is specifically focussed on typography.
The museum has a strong focus on interactivity, to communicate the hand made beginnings of typography.

Considerations

The design of these materials should be consistent and instantly identifiable as the museum. The style of design should not put off any designers that could, potentially, disagree with the design choices you have made for the museum branding. The naming of the museum is up to you but it must communicate an exciting and hands-on approach for people new to type as well as a well informed insight into contemporary design for the more experienced designers in the potential audience.

Audience

The target market for the museum is designers, school children and tourists. The main audience for the museum will be school children and student designers, whereas the gallery part of the establishment will attract a more experienced market looking to find out more about contemporary design and up and coming talent.

Tone of Voice

The branding and tone of voice of the museum must not reflect a snobby, elitist view of a typography but open arms to anybody that has any interest in the topic, regardless of knowledge.
The related design of the museum must be engaging and interactive whereas the gallery can take on a more refined and mature aesthetic.

Mandatory Requirements

Regular posts to design context blog on existing research and regular posts to design practice documenting the progress and development of the project.

Deliverables

Brand identity
Signage
Leaflet
Poster
5 Page Website

Feedback on brief direction

  • Need to remember that the focus of the brief needs to be on type and the exploration of typography
  • Audience needs to be better defined
  • Research on how people interact with type on a daily basis

5 Things I don't know about my content/ subject matter

  1. The number of floors and rooms that will be in the museum and gallery.
  2. The size and specific location of the museum.
  3. Who the specific audience is.
  4. How the content of the museum will be organised.
  5. Will the museum attract an international audience?
5 Ways the audience will interact with my design

  1. Using the way finding structures in place to navigate around the museum.
  2. Interactive maps would be a good addition to the product range.
  3. Online- interactive adverts embedded on relevant pages (design blogs, type foundries)
  4. Exterior design and directional signage.
  5. Posters in the city and local area.

5 Problems I have at the moment

  1. What is the most effective and relevant way finding design for this context?
  2. What colour will identify this museum from any other?
  3. How can type be used differently to other museums?
  4. What will appeal to designers (age 18-30)?
  5. What will be in the museum?

5 Reasons these problems need answering

  1. To make navigation easy and successful
  2. To make it stand out from other genres of museum
  3. Focus is on the use of type in branding so how can I apply this without it looking unclear or decorative?
  4. The design should grab the attention of the designer
  5. This will influence way finding and the content I put in leaflets, website etc.
