Type Hierarchy- Magazine & Brochures

Good Design
Front Cover- Daily Mail free magazine

Inside spread:

Evaluation:
Cover: reverse out type, relatively minimal, typeface that compliments the type used for the name of the publication.
Inside spread:A lot of small- mid size type with one obvious headline.

H&M Catalogue
Front Cover:

Inside Spread:

Evaluation: Very minimal, picture takes priority, type is very thin and white so it doesn't distract from the photography.

Average Design:

Newspaper- Westmorland Gazette

Front page:

Inside Spread:

Evaluation:
Front Cover: Lots of different type on the front page of this, the Westmorland Gazette, like most newspapers uses a very distinct blackletter font.
Spread: One colour used to define content, one obvious headline and a few subheads that use a similar point size.

Magazine: TV Easy

Spread:

A lot more colours are used in this TV guide than the other publications. High contrast, complimentary colours, there's also a lot more information on the front page and instead of having one obvious headline in the spread there are a few different stories that battle for attention.

Bad Design

Woodwork Magazine:

There is quite a small range of typefaces used on this magazine in comparison to some of the others.

The inside spreads are very standard and simple, the headlines don't stand out very much. The design of the magazine in general is quite un energetic and to the point. The designer of this spread has also chosen to use Comic Sans for the first paragraph of body copy which is very inappropriate for an article about making coasters & place mats.
