Design for Web Presentation Boards

Competition #1 - Arcade Fire T-shirt design

I saw this competition on Threadless (http://beta.threadless.com/arcadefire/) and thought it would be a good competition to turn around in a few days.
The brief is simply to design a t shirt that is inspired by the music of Arcade Fire.
As there is no limit on entried I decided to enter 3 designs as I quite fancy $2000 and a signed screen print.

#1
Rationale for Design #1
This design is heavily influenced by (Antichrist Television Blues). It is about escaping from everyday life and taking away the elements that are making it monotonous and repetitive.
The image tells a story of somebody who has had enough of the stories they are being fed through the television and have decided to axe down the electricity cables and walking off to experience a fuller and more worthwhile life.

#2
Rationale for design #2
This design is about 'wasting' time with the people that you love and not getting bogged down with the stresses and strains of everyday life. It is about running away and not worrying about the consequences.
The image shows two bags falling to the ground with no people near them, as they have already legged it.

#3

Rationale for design #3:
"To me Arcade Fire represent a rebellion against society and any form of soul-less activity.
In this design I have removed the keys that are used to spell Arcade Fire from the typewriter which represents a bigger, industrial machine."

Re-written Brief: Forestry Commission

The Brief

Create a campaign that raises awareness of all the outdoor activities the Forestry Commission provides.
The design should specifically target groups of males age 17-25 as this area of the market has proved to be difficult to persuade in the past.

The campaign should span a range of printed and digital products to widen that campaign appeal. All products should be aesthetically coherent and instantly grab the attention of the audience.

Mandatories

Your work must include the Forestry Commission logo and the website address - forestry.gov.uk. You may also use the set of bespoke brand fonts found within the project pack.

The brief shouldn't specifically promote the business that use the land of the forestry commission: go ape, bike hire etc.

Finished Website

Gif of front page:

Top left logo links back to home page

Rollover images at the bottom link to the 4 pages

Social network logos link to the correct pages

Design for Web - GIF (Click image)

For the home page I wanted the users cursor to erase the dirt from the World Toilet Day logo, however this would need JavaScript and coding that is going to be too complicated for this project.
To give an idea of this I have created this gif which shows the dirt being erased and then the logo turning to blue to link it to good sanitation and the importance of twitter and social networking for this cause.

Web Crit - Feedback

Strengths:

  • Strong and immediate visual impact
  • Interactive aspect would lend itself very well to the purpose of the website
  • Easy to navigate and clear purpose
Areas for Improvement:
  • Colour images would work better in showing the poor conditions and the situation

I tried using colour photos but I don't think that it suits the overall theme and feel of the website

Keeping the images b/w keep the page simple and put the emphasis on the social network links

I have made the corner logo into a rollover image that turns it to a twitter blue to emphasise the importance of social networking with this cause.

I could also do this with the images but then i could run the risk of having too many rollover images and it being some sort of crazy screen based disco

Web Mock-up

This is the home page for the site

I didn't think that the white bar across the page looks as correct digitally as it did on the scamp. Making this black with bright white rollover links helps to tie the page together aesthetically.

When links are clicked it takes you through to a page with this layout:

Design for Web: Lightbox

To separate a box of text or an image from the edge of the column it is in:

Lightbox is a photo slide show that is free to use

Copy from downloads into your site folder

To use lightbox you need to prepare 2 images, one for the thumbnail and one that will expand.
